Join GEEARS for a lunchtime conversation with Rear Admiral (Ret.) Casey Coane as he shares insights into why early learning is a national security imperative and how quality early learning impacts public safety. Coane is a member of Mission: Readiness, an organization of retired Admirals and Generals strengthening national security by ensuring kids stay in school, stay fit, and stay out of trouble.
Born and raised in Redondo Beach, California, Rear Admiral (Ret.) Casey Coane is the son of a California National Guard officer who served in the South Pacific in WWII as a Brigadier General. RADM Coane’s thirty-four year military career consisted of eleven years of Active Duty and twenty-three years of Reserve Duty. In civilian life, RADM Coane worked for thirty-two years as a pilot for Eastern Air Lines and Delta Air Lines where he retired as a Captain on the MD-88 aircraft in 2005. RADM Coane served as the CEO, National Executive Director for the Association of the United States Navy (AUSN) from October 2006 through September 2013.
Of Georgia high school graduates who try to join the military, 1 in 4 score too low on the Armed Forces Qualification Test to join the Army. This is because they are too poorly educated, too overweight, or have a record of crime or drug abuse.
If these issues are not addressed, our nation risks a shortage of qualified recruits that will jeopardize military readiness and leave the country vulnerable for years to come. Research studies highlighted by the national security organization Mission: Readiness, show that the early years of life have a significant impact on educational attainment, behaviors, and health.
